Janet Fish (1938-2025) was renowned for her vibrant paintings that are a “celebration of light and color,” continually delighting the eye and engaging the mind. Her work invigorated the traditional still life through the energetic, expressive way she paints and the often witty and ironic combinations of objects she selects. Glass bowls overflowing with fruit, exotic vases of vivid flowers, seashells, sumptuous textiles, flea market treasures, and edible delights are all meticulously arranged and rendered in decisive yet fluid strokes of intensely colored paint.
Her artistic direction crystallized in the late 1960s, when she began experimenting with how illumination filters through transparent and reflective materials. As her still lifes evolved, they became richer in detail and chromatic intensity, yet the behavior of light continued to anchor her work. She believed that light functioned as a unifying force, an active presence connecting all forms and objects, and this outlook shaped the way she built her compositions. To her, light was a continuous flow of energy through the scene, which is why she approached each painting as an integrated field rather than a collection of isolated elements.
