Tomie dePaola
Tomie dePaola (1934 - 2020) was one of the most widely known and beloved figures in children’s literature. He received many of the field’s highest honors, including a Caldecott Honor Award for Strega Nona, a Newbery Honor Award for 26 Fairmount Avenue, the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal for his lasting contribution to children’s literature, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of Illustrators.
At the time of this recording, Tomie was 78 years old and deeply reflective about his life and work. He spoke with clarity and warmth about childhood, creativity, and the importance of paying attention to the world around you. Raised in a close-knit Irish-Italian family that loved stories and laughter, Tomie knew early on that he wanted to write books and draw pictures. Encouraged by his parents and teachers, he held onto that sense of purpose throughout his life.
For students, Tomie’s story offers a powerful reminder that creative paths begin early and are shaped by curiosity, practice, and encouragement. His reflections help young people see that books are made by real people, and that their own ideas, observations, and stories matter too.
