Our Impact

Our Mission: Story Preservation Initiative

Evaluation surveys, developed to measure the efficacy of our approach, have shown:

  • A measurable increase in student engagement as determined by level of classroom participation, quality of work, efforts to go “above and beyond” assignments, and the satisfaction that students have expressed with their Learning Lab experiences

  • A measurable increase in teacher engagement and satisfaction

  • Evidence of increased subject mastery as demonstrated by the presentation of ideas in a variety of media, including writing and oral presentations, authentic discussion, level of analysis beyond content, use of evidence, organization of material, and persuasiveness.

  • An increase in critical thinking and analytical skills.

SPI projects encourage self-guided exploration that often results in an exciting blend of multi-disciplinary learning.

“Some of the students that I couldn’t engage to write loved writing their field observations in their nature journals.  It was very interesting to see how the project expanded and how they grew through this.”

I can definitely see that this [Story Preservation project] had a positive impact on my students. Some have mentioned that they want a career in science. One even said that he wants to be an ornithologist. That was the point when I realized that this was working and is making a difference. I went from having a class full of students who wanted to be YouTubers to three or four who want to do something in science. It was amazing. It’s working. I love it.
