Remembering and Healing: Genocide Awareness Month

April Is Genocide Awareness Month

April is often the time when young people are first made aware of genocide. It is a time to educate and reflect on the darkest chapters of human history, honor the memories of those who lost their lives to genocide, and the resilience of survivors.

Painting by Samuel Bak, whose story is included in SPI’s collection.

SPI has produced a collection of stories told by Holocaust survivors. The collection is archived on SPI’s website, at the Library of Congress, and at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. The Holocaust stands as a stark reminder of the human capacity for cruelty and the consequences of unchecked hatred and prejudice.

While remembering the victims of past genocides, it's crucial to focus on preventing future atrocities. Education, awareness, and advocacy play key roles in fostering understanding, empathy, and tolerance among diverse communities. By promoting human rights, combating hate speech, and holding perpetrators of genocide accountable, we can work towards a world where such atrocities are never repeated.
